Snap! A twig broke into two at Lauraโs feet and I almost yelled. Our cover was blown! I could hear Lauraโs teeth chattering beside me along with Jakeโs laboured breaths. My heart rate shot up like a rocket. We were surrounded by a composition (a song) of cackling witches, shrieks of pain, low-frequency howls and other ominous sounds. Was it our brain or was it real? Suddenly, one word appeared in our minds; it was our last resolve- Run! However our legs remained rooted to the spot. ๐ด๐ ๐๐๐๐'๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐...
The day was dark and gloomy with the sky highly overcast. There was a loud knock on the wooden door of our house- Kirrin Cottage. At the door, stood two of my best friends: Laura and Jake, the twins. Their hazel eyes sparkled as they saw me. They greeted me excitedly and told me that they had so much to tell me. Laura pushed back a tuft of her chocolate brown hair (the same as Jackโs) as they hurriedly explained about how they found an old treasure map to a place marked โXโ marked on it. I groaned and tried to explain how the day was rather stormy, but they would hear none of it. Such cockalorums they were! After what seemed like hours of persuasion, I agreed to go with them for the sake of their happiness. I packed a few supplies into my backpack and the three of us left to uncover our destiny. It was all good until we reached a place, according to the map, called the Forest of Doom.
Gigantic oak trees surrounded us and looked down upon us. Just when I thought the towering trees were frightening enough, drip, drip, drip! As we sloshed our way along the path my clothes cling to my skin and my blonde hair was plastered across my face. The twins looked at me apologetically, but I could only offer them looks of disgust and looks saying โI told you soโ. We tried to be cheery, alas we failed miserably like the pathetic souls we were. Finally we reached a clearing after aeons of being vagabonds and Jake cried that we were on the โXโ marked on the map. We dug a small hole and found a cold yet smooth bronze box with intricate designs and carvings on it; it seemed rather ancient with the bronze rather rusted, but it served its purpose.
There was also a note attached to it saying that it could only be opened by the emerald-eyed one. It was me but we felt uneasy; it was as if this โsomeoneโ was waiting for us to discover this box or chest. With a quick motion of my hand, I opened the chest by pressing a combination of buttons. My eyes tore open and remained glued to its contents- a priceless and invaluable treasure of gold and gold jewellery. Oh, how it sparkled and shimmered on that misty November evening! We jumped up and down euphoric. But, our happiness was short-lived. โWho goes there,โ howled some cackling witches around us. Thatโs when we that it was all over.
we sprinted back the way we came, fighting for our lives. Iโd never loved myself so much before as the thunders and downpour bothered us no more. On reaching the skirts of the forest, we were jubilant, but yet again we celebrated too early. A thick mist obstructed the path ahead of us, a thick veil of white seemed to end our lives too quickly. It couldnโt be possible, we were too young! Anger grew inside me and my blood boiled. I was enraged! Who did these people think they were? In my last attempts of frustration,
I shouted, โLet us go, you vile creature!โ
They responded by murmuring something about me- the emerald-eyed one. The important thing was that they let us go!
We were so overjoyed to be back home. We gave the chest to the museum. As a reward, we were given any three artefacts each of our choice. I chose a splendid bracelet with an enormous emerald on it. This was the scariest yet best moments of our life.
